More affordable housing and Breckenridge real estate is necessary to sustain the Town's service and tourist industries. Fortunately, these kinds of needs are now being looked at more scientifically and we hope to see homes with modest price tags midst Breckenridge real estate scene entering the market in the future.
Beginning in 2001, the Town of Breckenridge began a Community Visioning process seeking public input through various exercises, surveys, and discussions in an effort to throw out an anchor 20 years into the future. The Visioning process is thankfully very popular with Breckenridge residents who have been quick to participate and express themselves.
More specifically, the 2006 Breckenridge Community Survey gathered information on how Breckenridge is now performing, the effectiveness of town services, who lives here, and the priorities for spending—information the Town Council needs to make better decisions.
Not surprisingly, Breckenridge people love the community cooperation and sense of town, the great recreational options, beauty, parks, trails, transit system, and safety. Three areas begged for improvement: Affordable housing, traffic flow and parking. As the Town Planning code revisions encompass “green” building principles now, we expect to find some environmentally friendly options in the future. Besides consideration of building materials and heating/cooling systems, builders, developers and officials will be looking for ways to create higher density housing. Higher density may mean going up a story, smaller lots, multi-family units, condominiums, and town houses with smaller yards within walking distance of the historic downtown. We could see existing properties being converted and many other creative solutions.
As each resident is a part of the Town, the best way to make it happen is to stay tuned and get involved where you can make a difference. Rest assured that whatever happens will be done under the microscope in the best way possible.
