In addition to alpine skiing/boarding, adventurers seeking a more subdued winter experience will find nearby groomed trails for cross-country Nordic skiing, snow-shoeing or sledding, while others explore backcountry terrain by snowmobile or sleigh. Adaptive skiing with special seats and equipment is available for those who need it. And everyone loves ice-skating at Maggie Pond as well as the international snow-sculpture contest in January.
Historical notes: The oldest and largest of the Summit County communities, this former mining town got its start when gold was discovered nearby in 1859. Abandoned in the early 20th century, it revived after the 1960s opening of I-70 and the Eisenhower Tunnel, and morphed into ski resort. Since most of Colorado’s first-generation, ski-slope personnel migrated from older resorts in the Austrian, Bavarian and Swiss Alps, this area soon developed a unique character, blending Old West with Old World in a modern twist.
