You choose! There is everything—from wooded cabins for sale near Breckenridge, to executive estates for sale in Breckenridge, to Breckenridge ranches for sale and picturesque Breckenridge condos for sale, along side Victorian-brick, 2-story homes for sale in Breckenridge. Boasting a very interesting history as well as present-day creativity, this resort town is being sought out as a world-class, year-round destination for visitors, second-home buyers and retirees who love the active lifestyle.

A bit of name dropping: In 1859, the town was founded by a group of prospectors including George E. Spencer of Alabama. It was originally named for President Buchanan’s vice-president, James C. Breckinridge of Kentucky. When the Buchanan/Breckinridge presidential ticket was defeated in 1860 and Breckinridge returned to Congress where he opposed Lincoln’s war measures and was consequently expelled from the Senate. He joined the Confederacy, becoming a Confederate army general and President Jefferson Davis’ secretary of war. Afterwards, the pro-Unionist Spencer petitioned Congress to change the namesake of the town. Congress obliged— but only by changing the first “i” to and “e”—!

During the gold rush, the town never saw industrial-scale mining but was put on the map when a small-time prospector unearthed the largest gold nugget ever found in North America. The “boom” lasted quite a while but went “bust” in the 1940’s, leaving behind a quiet, sleepy town of little interest to the outside world.

Modern renewal: During the 1960’s, following the construction of I-70 and the Eisenhower Tunnel, the first world-class ski resort was built in Summit County. And so this town, which is the county seat, awakened to a brisk winter economy. Today’s ingenious residents have transformed it into a top summertime destination, too.

Summer recreation: There is never a dull moment around here. Start with public recreational facilities with a year-round ice rink, a skateboard path, a mountain-bike trail system and riding stables; then indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a pool, racquetball courts, a steam room, a hot tub; and disabled-visitors summer recreation events such as kayaking and rope courses. Fun-seekers can take a chair lift up to Peak 8 Fun Park, which has an alpine slide, a rock-climbing wall, bungie jumping, miniature golf and a large maze, as well as hiking and biking trails. And there’s hiking in the Arapaho National Forest.

In 1991, Golf Digest named the Jack Nicklaus-designed Breckenridge Golf Club the top public course in Colorado with challenges at every level. Fisherman can test their skills fly-fishing along the Blue River, in mountain ponds or in the cold, deep waters of Lake Dillon. Anyone can rent a pontoon boat, a canoe, paddleboat or even a sailboat. The Ten Mile Range of the Rockies can be explored from the back of a horse. And the history buff can find several once-booming town-sites and a number of “haunted” buildings.

Our state flower, the Columbine...
Community fun: There are lots of live summer concerts, fairs, and festivals. A few hours spent walking up and down Main Street and the historic district will acquaint you with museums, galleries, gift shops, clothing stores, restaurants and more. Decide on northern Italian food, contemporary French, a tapas bar, pub-brewed root beer, affordable natural food, or a Mexican lunch.
