Fairplay Close Enough to Breckenridge
By Suzy Allemang
If you are looking for an affordable alternative in the Colorado resort market and Breckenridge real estate, you really should take a closer look at this wonderful spot in the world. We consider this area to be an extension of the Summit County market. The average cost for a single family home or vacant land is far less than Breckenridge real estate and the Summit County area, yet it is only a 30 minute drive to Breckenridge, where you can experience our World Class Ski Area, shops, restaurants, bars, etc.
This scenic area has a lot of historical value. The Ute Indians would journey here to spend their summer hunting the bountiful supply of elk and buffalo. Then the French Trappers made their mark, calling this area Bayou Salado, in reference to the salt flats south of Fairplay. Eventually people started to call it "South Park". Fairplay was named by the gold prospectors who settled it in 1859. When they were driven from nearby Tarryall by miners who had staked more claims than they could work, they decided that in "Fair Play" every man would have an equal chance to stake a claim. Anyone interested in the history of the old west and western mining should visit the South Park City Museum in Fairplay.
The Fairplay area has so much to offer! Larger homesites, less density, (Only one traffic light!) and lower priced properties, yet close enough to enjoy the resorts. It is a terrific alternative for those looking for true mountain living! From Ranches to Ranchettes, to a cabin in the woods, or a gorgeous secluded mountain home with a view, you may find just what you've been looking for!
