Nestled in the heart of the historic Town of Breckenridge, the award-winning Riverwalk Center performing-arts facility is the focal point for plenty of summer activities. Its amphitheater is part of the Town of Breckenridge’s 1992 Blue River restoration project. Prior to that, the Blue River and its surroundings were piles of rock left over from dredge mining during the Breckenridge gold rush. Surrounding the Riverwalk Center, the Blue River Walkway and the native landscape offer a beautiful setting for picnics, these wonderful concerts, and relaxing moments along the banks of the Blue River.
Key to it all is the highly acclaimed Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra (BMF) led by Maestro Gerhardt Zimmermann. While the repertoire of the Orchestra in residence is largely classical, there’s something for everyone, ranging from intimate chamber to jazz and pops to Broadway, opera, dance, rock, and blues. An incomparable series of experiences are presented in a series of venues including the Riverwalk Center Concerts, the Blue River Series, and the Champagne Series.
The Blue River Series features nationally known performing artists mixed with regional talent and entertainment. Riders in the Sky, Nitty Gritty Dirt Bank, and Willie & Lobo played this year. The 2007 Champagne Chamber Series included a String Quartet, Woodwind Quintet, Violin and Piano, Brass Quintet and more—playing everything from sonatas and preludes to “Lord of the Rings” and ancient Hungarian dances. This series is held in the lovely homes of area residents.
Great prices for season passes, flex passes, 4-packs, and individual tickets can be purchased at the Riverwalk Center. Tickets are usually quite a bit less expensive when purchased ahead of time. Theatre doors open one-half hour prior to the show and free parking is available adjacent to the Riverwalk Center. Although the Riverwalk Center is a heated amphitheater, attendees dress for cool evenings at a 9600-foot elevation.
Financial contributions, time donations, and enthusiastic community support are important threads in the artistic tapestry of this historic Victorian ski community. All benefit the greater Colorado Rocky Mountain community in turn by the tone of the Festival’s motto “In the Key of Excellence!”
