This is a great checklist to help anyone relocate. Immediately following your decision to move into a home in Breckenridge, Colorado or Summit County real estate, read over these pointers so that you will have them in mind. If you follow these hints, “Breckenridge, Here I Come” will be your song and you’ll never look back!
A month before the moving date
Moving company: Find a moving company that is familiar with Breckenridge real estate. Be sure that the company is aware of all items that need to move to the Breckenridge property. Movers usually charge by the actual weight of the load and the transported distance. However, it is possible to receive a flat rate confirmation in writing. If you do obtain a flat rate, binding estimate, just be aware of likely additional fees for any items added on at the last minute. Get all of your questions answered before the company loads the truck.
Insurance: Decide whether you would like to purchase an additional insurance policy to cover any lost or damaged goods. Most moving companies assume responsibility for the shipment. However, they will not automatically pay you the entire market value.
Utilities: Contact your utility companies to determine fees and deposits required for the move.
Mail: Submit a change of address to the post office where you currently receive mail.
Schools: Inform the schools where your children are attending. Ask schools to send transcripts to the new schools.
Churches: Notify your church of your intentions to move and request information about a possible new church for your family.
Records: Be sure that you have copies of all legal records including birth and marriage certificates. Also, bring records of baptisms and other sacraments for your new church. Ask your medical establishments for records of shots, eye prescriptions, and medications. Be sure your animals have the required shots, tags, and health certificates.
Credit accounts: Get permission to move open credit accounts for cars and other possessions. Transfer or close charge accounts. Ask your bank for credit references to establish new accounts at your new home.
Unwanted items: Consider having a garage sale or donating items to charity. Get tax-deductable receipts for items of worth.
Use items in pantry: Think about using up your supplies of frozen food, canned goods, and other household items.
One week before the move
- Finalize the disconnect time and date for your utilities, submit your new address for the final billing, and ask for deposits to be refunded.
- Transfer your fire insurance on household goods and personal possessions (include the move itself).
- Notify your bank, transfer your accounts, and close your safe deposit box. Arrange for sufficient cash to cover the move. (Moving companies require cash or certified checks.)
- Gather together items going to storage or repair. Clean the rugs and drapes that will move with you and apply a coating of protective paste wax to furniture.
- Bring your gym clothes home. Return library books and anything else that you have borrowed.
- Make travel plans and have your car serviced.
- Finally, cancel telephone and home deliveries and leave the keys with someone like a neighbor.
Bon Voyage!
