Glorious Hunting around Breckenridge

If you are the adventurous outdoorsman looking for the challenge of deer and elk hunting, Colorado is the place to be. More elk live in Colorado than anywhere in the world. Colorado’s White River National Forest offers hundreds of miles of trails for hunting access and other mountain recreation with easy access to Breckenridge real estate and other Summit County resorts.

White River is one of the largest and most beautiful national forests in America. It features mountains covered with evergreens and aspen rising above 12,000 feet near the Breckenridge real estate and resort areas, boasting twice as many elk as any other area in Colorado! Hunters also listen for the bugle of the bull elk in other popular hunting grounds. The Gore and Williams Fork Mountain Ranges, the surrounding Arapaho National Forest, and the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area are very popular units. There are also some choice private properties and deer and elk leases—why you could even buy your own Colorado recreational ranch near Breckenridge. Many hunters find the most fulfilling experience during a do-it-yourself, non-guided hunt on private Summit County property.

Hunters choose their hunting units depending on whether they want meat, horns, a trophy, or a cow. Large mammals are not the only game in the state. The state has 222 wildlife areas where many wild animals make their homes. In addition to the trophy worthy elk, deer, and nimble pronghorn, there are abundant birds and other game to bring home. Timing also plays a part. There is archery season in late August, muzzleloader season in mid-September, and four rifle seasons that follow through November. Add the excitement of unpredictable weather, and there is always a challenge.

No matter what area, animal, or season you choose, it is important that you learn the hunting rules. Not every area is fair game and legal to hunt. Interested hunters can contact the Forest Service website or a licensed hunting guide for information. Here are some safety precautions:
• Keep track of each person in a large group and know which direction everybody is firing.
• Be careful when shooting around other people.
• Avoid carrying your gun while crossing a fence. Hand the gun to your hunting partner while you climb over, or if alone, lay the gun on the ground or against a fence post before attempting to cross.
• The safety of your gun should always be on until the moment you are preparing to shoot.
• Carry the gun with both hands, always with the barrel pointed to the sky.

After taking all of the safety precautions, hunting is truly an enjoyable and rewarding journey. It requires science, art, work, and ingenuity.
