Conquering Rocky Mountain Ice

When in Rome, do as the Romans. When living in Breckenridge homes, get familiar with Mother Nature in all of her glory. Learn how to conquer the ice. We do not mean icy roads here, but mountainsides of frozen waterfalls. With modern technology leading more regular residents of Breckenridge real estate out into the vast beyond, weekend climbing expeditions are more commonplace in the Summit County region.

There are physical and psychological benefits. Mountaineering, including ice climbing, is such an intense and focused experience that participants actually overcome fear. Overcoming a fear of heights, mountaineer enthusiasts transfer the victorious sense to other parts of their lives. In fact, some participate simply to build confidence and self-reliance. That goes a long way when living in and near the wilderness in North America.

Being one pointed causes the concerns of life bouncing around in the multi-tasking mind to disappear.  There is no time up on a wall of ice to let the mind drift off to work or other cares. The total person must be on alert to stay warm, avoid danger, and to discern the next move. One-pointed focus causes the entire being to enter the “zone.” The brain turns off when the feet are rhythmically kicking and the ice tools are swinging.

It does take an incredible physical effort, too. Some begin the trek with daily cardio work, weights, and stepping. No one wants to be stuck up in a remote part of a canyon battling cold and wet without the physical stamina to accomplish the necessary climbs. Ice climbers deliberately set challenging goals to conquer. On a windy or cold day, ice climbers set out determinedly to explore.

Another key feature of “great” is the sheer beauty of taking in extraordinary winter landscapes that few will ever experience. The gorgeous views of infinite solace live on in the memory forever. Although some try to capture them on film, the sounds, smells, movement, and feelings are unique to each climber. In contrast to rock climbing, the conditions of the ice change continually, affecting the trickling water deep inside the grand icicles. Each year the climbs form up differently depending on moisture levels and weather. The routes are on frozen waterfalls, resulting in constantly changing technical challenges and visually stunning climbing surfaces.

Anyone forging into this sport must procure the right gear to have a great experience. The most notable different apparatus for the sport are the sharp metal crampons that attach to sturdy mountaineering boots. Solid clothing and gear are essential. Many find that renting gear and hiring a guide are the best first steps.
