Join South Park Fly Fishers in Park County CO

By the end of March, reservations for fly fishing spots on seven historic ranches in Park County real estate will be opening up. Don’t let the 18 inches of ice and two feet of snow still floating on the some of the Summit County and Park County rivers deter you from joining the South Park Fly Fishers for the upcoming fly-fishing season. Sign up and give us a call to tour some real estate around Fairplay, Colorado and Alma.

We can do it either way: Look at real estate in Breckenridge and the other resorts in Summit County or find a nice little ranch of your own around Fairplay’s real estate in Park County. Or plan to see a little of both. Owning your own fishing cabin in Park County or some real estate in Breckenridge, your family and friends can enjoy not only fly fishing in Colorado but snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding along with the world-class skiing and riding options in the resorts at Breckenridge and Keystone.

The South Park Fly Fishers do not require membership to reserve your spot on a private ranch in the area. Through a wonderful program established as a community service by Great Outdoors Colorado and Park County, the following ranches will accommodate your fishing party for $35-60 a day per person.

Ute Creek Ranch, Lazy River Ranch, Tarryall L&C Ranch, Upper Allen Creek Ranch and Lower Allen Creek Ranch offer long stretches of waters at 8,600-8,800 feet in elevation. Lower Fourmile Creek Ranch on Fourmile Creek is at 9,700 feet, and new this year is the Santa Maria Ranch.

Let’s take the Santa Maria as an example of what to expect during your landmark stay. The 2,500-acre ranch is bisected by an idyllic section of the Middle Fork of the South Platte River. Extensive stream restoration work in 2006 included the construction of many new fish structures and erosion control measures resulting in a significantly increased fish-holding capacity. Many trout currently occupy the new, deep pools.

The waters at this ranch are well suited to two or three anglers in the same group because of the large channel size and open banks. The lower section heads downstream through a hay meadow where, at regular intervals, you’ll find new fish structures. The middle section is a combination of long runs, small pockets, and a few deep pools. The upper third is characterized by gentle meanders, fast riffles, and large, deep pools.  Wild browns are distributed in the runs and pockets, with larger browns, rainbows and cuttbows in the deep pools.

Give us a call at (970) 547-1002 and Rick Allemang will show you his stomping grounds and help find one for you. Next time around, you can hang your pole in your own garage.
