Make plans to visit some choice Breckenridge real estate during Kingdom Days, the celebration of the colorful history of Breckenridge. We will plan to show you some nice Breckenridge condos, Breckenridge ski-in/ski-out properties, some rural properties in Breckenridge, or a great place on the Breckenridge Golf Course.  This year’s Kingdom Days Celebration is the prelude to the Grand Celebration in 2009—Breckenridge’s 150th anniversary!
During Kingdom Days on June 14 and 15, 2008, history is king. Displays feature the cartography mix up as well as gold fields and mining, exploration and adventure, brothels and saloons, booms and busts. Other simultaneous events such as the 2nd Annual NRO Repertory Run, an early morning 5K, a 2K and the Kid’s Dash are happening that weekend, too. Arrive a week early and enjoy the action at the Breckenridge Festival of Film.
Why did the town become known as “Colorado’s Kingdom After the Town was founded in 1859, apparently the official map makers for the United States never got word. So, if you owned a home in the Town of Breckenridge, you had better know how to get home! Alternatively, the town became known as “Colorado’s Kingdom,†a pseudonym that stuck for about 75 years—until 1936 when it was finally incorporated.
Apparently, the cartographers could not easily reach our beautiful ski resort. Without Interstate 70, maybe they didn’t travel into these parts very often. But those who did visit the Colorado Rocky Mountain areas would have had great fun using symbols and lines to illustrate the dramatic geographic phenomena in Summit County. Although today computers track the surfaces of the earth and readily produce updated maps, maps of all scales have traditionally been drawn and made by hand.
Cartography combines science, aesthetics, and technical ability to create a balanced and readable representation that is capable of communicating information effectively. A well-designed map also convinces people that an area is authentic. Maybe our town was simply too small in those days and the dot on the map diminished into its valleys! But, more likely, cartographers relied on information submitted through agencies to assistants sitting at desks in big cities.
Although “Colorado’s Kingdom†never made it onto the map either, folks definitely heard about our exciting mountain town and many made their way into these hills in the hunt for gold and silver. Today, as one of the world’s finest ski resorts has nuzzled into our mountainsides, our town is definitely on the map.
