Learn About Historic Summit County CO

Real estate in Summit County, Colorado spans the Rocky Mountain Peaks and the centuries.  Each of the more populated areas of Summit County—Breckenridge real estate, Keystone, Dillon, Silverthorne, and Copper Mountain—tells interesting stories, including some very adventurous ones.  There are several historic tours to be taken, including guided trips to local gold mines.

Then, too, the architecture itself of homes in Breckenridge and Summit County real estate gives a glimpse of the story, imparting special personalities to our wonderful mountain communities.  For example, the Ten Mile Mountain Range is a wonderful backdrop for the Victorian Breckenridge Historic District that introduces residents and visitors to the spicy character of Breckenridge.

Study excellent examples of historic commercial architecture on Main, Ridge, and Lincoln streets.  Then study the historic examples of residential architecture on Ridge, French, Harris, and High streets and the three nineteenth-century churches from the gold-rush era.  The facades reflect the Victorian age in the mining town transformed into a ski resort.

A movement for designation of a Historic District began in Breck in the late 1970s when people started thinking of ways to celebrate the Centennial of the Town’s incorporation in 1880.  Working with the Colorado Historical Society for the purpose of historical preservation, the designation was granted 1980—just in time.

In addition, all of the buildings east of the Blue River that remained from the first settlement in 1859 through the end of gold dredge period in 1942 were surveyed, mapped, and cataloged as to their primary historical significance or contribution to the character of the district.  The project insures the preservation of 249 buildings through strict development and design standards.  To add a seamless feel to the area, all new construction within the District also reflects the historic character.

That’s just touching the surface, though.  The Summit Historical Society, a very dedicated group of area residents, works to discover, preserve, interpret, and exhibit the rich heritage and history throughout the county.  Along with providing tours of historic buildings and mine sites, the Society maintains collections of artifacts, photographs, and documents, and manages several public-education programs.  The Historical Society has captured and shares a wealth of knowledge about the gold rush days, the skiing history, and the Native American and Black heritage in the area.
