If you are purchasing Breckenridge real estate at Tiger Run Resort or Rock Resorts’ One Ski Hill Place, you will most likely be biking, hiking, and horseback riding, and strolling along the beautiful and challenging Peaks Trail. The decision to buy a home in Breckenridge or in Summit County will pretty much guarantee that you will lead an active lifestyle—along Peaks Trail and many others—that will promote better health.
Let’s look at Peaks Trail, a 10-mile segment between Breckenridge CO real estate and Frisco through the pine and aspen trees with occasional views of the Tenmile Range and the Front Range. Starting near real estate in Breckenridge, follow Ski Hill Road as it climbs above the Town of Breckenridge past Peak 8. About a mile into the dirt road, find the sign for the Peaks Trailhead. There is a parking lot next to it. Wander up the trail through the woods, up and down streams, valleys, and boggy sections (during mud season). At six miles, Peaks Trail passes the Gold Hill and Colorado Trails and then drops steeply toward Frisco CO real estate. This trail brings out the pure joy of traversing the slopes through the pristine forests and meadows, crossing open spaces, gnarly spots, bridges, and rock gardens.
For the mountain biker, this popular trail offers excellent singletrack with lots of variations, some fast-winding. There are short ascents, lots of roots and rocks, and a super-fun downhill section. Taking off from Breck, the hard work in the beginning pays off by the exhilarating downhill ending. Bikers need to watch their speed and be on the lookout for narrow curving edges, hikers, and horseback riders. The climbs are not too technical, but the elevation can cause some difficulties that newcomers will immediately notice. Riding ten miles in the thin air at 9,000 to 10,500 feet in elevation can take some getting used to but fret not. The free Summit Stage, with its bike rack, runs between the communities and has rescued more than one tired biker as well as others stranded in a sudden weather change. Plan an all-day excursion if you want to ride both ways, even if you take a partially paved option back.
The diversity of Peaks Trail will call you back over and over. During the spring and summer, tiny wildflowers change the scenery day by day. By fall, the golden sun-kissed aspen leaves shimmer throughout the woods and carpet the floor of the forest by season’s end—just waiting to be scrunched beneath your feet.
Other side trails include North Barton Gulch and Miner’s Creek trails. The entire family will enjoy hiking the soft pine needle cushioned sections along the bubbling stream past brook trout, beaver dams, and gentle falls. Beautiful views of Mt. Baldy and Guyot and wonderful picnic spots. If you’d rather catch a bite in Frisco, try the Butterhorn Bakery or the Rocky Mountain Café.
