Breck’s Ultimate Frisbee Social Life

A morning stroll to Carter Park may introduce new residents of vacation Breckenridge, Colorado real estate to the game of Ultimate Frisbee during the summertime.  Adding to those informal pick-up games the Breckenridge Recreation Center’s Ultimate Frisbee Social League, newcomers will find plenty of folks to sit by the hearth of their second homes in Breckenridge all year round.  Ask us about Breckenridge CO real estate near Carter Park and the Rec Center!

This year on July 20, during the 40th anniversary of the sport, comes the “Lung Buster,” Breckenridge’s 15th Annual Ultimate Frisbee Co-ed Benefit Tournament in Kingdom Park at Highway 9 and Valley Brook Road.  To get practiced up, the adult sports program at the Rec Center offers a creatively fun take on the “sport” of Ultimate Frisbee.  Not just this year but every year, the teams change names to fit a theme.  They also organize showcase games into the schedule, offering food and beverage and plenty of time to socialize.

What is Ultimate Frisbee, anyway?  For those who think that they are unfamiliar, think about decades-old barefoot teams of seven running around on grassy spreads in your hometown.  A more common scene as the years roll along, the game supposedly started in 1968 when a New Jersey high-school student, Joel Silver, conjured up the idea with his friends.  Little did they perceive that today over 800,000 Americans and over 40 other nations look forward to getting out in the parks and boning up for the national world-cup in the pastime.

Kind of a scramble of football, soccer, and basketball, the self-officiated game goes like this.  Someone shouts, “Ultimate!” signaling the offense to freeze.  The Frisbee may not touch the ground as it is adeptly passed down the field by players who may not take a step.  It manages to be very athletic, none-the-less, and quite competitive.

Having lost the stigma of its younger years when Frisbee-throwing hippies lingered in parks with all of the time in the world on their hands, today’s players are busy people who strike a balance in their lives with the somewhat relaxing social sport.  It’s great for couples who are looking for ways to spend time together and with friends and it works for singles, too, who like mixed company.
