Rain, Runoff and Whitewater

Why not edge out of your comfortable Breckenridge, Colorado home and in to some thick whitewater this year?  Or, if you’ve yet to look at Breckenridge as the location for your vacation real estate in Summit or Park counties, give us a call and we’ll meet you at the end of your float.  Also, consider Breckenridge real estate as an investment in your health and your family’s future.

At least, come out for some play boating.  Play boaters experiment with paddling techniques and body movements.  Experienced play boaters ride waves and perform tricks but beginners can get acquainted with the water in other ways.  If this all sounds a bit much for your tastes, come out for some fly fishing or paddle boating around Maggie Pond or a summer concert.  Convenient real estate in Breckenridge offers years of family enjoyment and relaxation.

The high levels of mountain snowpack this year, combined with abundant rains and runoff are creating very exciting conditions for boaters.  High water and rising temperatures will continue to produce big water.  Although we’ve avoided the extreme runoff conditions by the gradually warming spring temperatures this year, kayakers and rafters are finding some decent Class IV rapids.  As summer warmth hits, the season should be extended a tad, too.  Cooler temperatures prolong the snowmelt.

Even so, as the high water opens up new boating options, a different set of requirements and standards are upon paddlers.  One is the need to be in shape.  Boaters cannot sit around all year and then jump into the rough seas.  They need to be prepared for dangerous situations and unexpected Class V waters.  Of course, anyone venturing into the rivers in a watercraft needs to be a good swimmer or at least be wearing good-quality lifejackets.  No one wants to find themselves out of a boat that has flipped, but everyone should be prepared to swim in the cold water.  Other hazards include debris such as logs and strainers along the banks.
