Only 20 miles from Breckenridge real estate, Arapahoe Basin continues to be the first ski area to open and offers the longest season. If you’re thinking about Colorado investment properties in Summit County–maybe vacation real estate in Breckenridge, Keystone, Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne, Wildernest, or Montezuma—the best prices can be found outside the main resorts of Breckenridge CO real estate and Keystone.

Silverthorne CO real estate or property in rural Montezuma could be the best option for your family. Ask about subdivisions in Blue River Run, Angler Mountain Ranch, and Homestead at Three Peaks, Osprey, and more.

That’s where Arapahoe Basin ski area comes in mighty handy. It is only 65 miles from Denver and it is an up and coming ski locale. You remember that the Epic Season Pass, available until November 15, is a great deal. It works at Breckenridge Ski Resort and all of the Vail Resorts ski communities PLUS at Arapahoe Basin.

From a base at 10,780 feet to a summit of 13,050, Arapahoe Basin features the highest skiable terrain in North America. It offers wonderful views of the Continental Divide, Lake Dillon, Breckenridge, Keystone, Montezuma, and Loveland Pass. Last year the Basin expanded into Montezuma Bowl, adding an 80-percent increase in terrain. The new terrain includes 36 additional runs on blue, black, and double black slopes with groomed runs, cornices, chutes, glades, and wide-open bowls.

Arapahoe Basin worked closely with the White River National Forest and other agencies to ensure that the $3 million project minimally affected the environment. The new Zuma Lift is 4,100 feet long and rises 1,100 vertical feet in 9 minutes and is able to carry 1,900 skiers each hour. Several runs will be groomed for night use and the Montezuma offers entry to vast portions of backcountry terrain.

The Arapahoe Basin ski area was started by Max and Edna Dercum along with their Ski Tip Lodge in Keystone in the 1940s. It has grown to include 105 trails served by 7 lifts and now offers some of the most extensive skiable acreage anywhere in the nation. A-Basin has three gathering places. At the base is a full cafeteria, bar, coffee bar, and outside grill. At the peak of the Norway and Lenawee lifts, skiers find the Snow Plume refuge, a warm hut with drinks, snacks, and hot soup. And at the top of the Exhibition lift is black Mountain Lodge serving an alpine bistro-style menu.

Lessons and the children’s program begin later in November. For more information about mountain real estate in the resort areas, contact Rick Allemang at 970-547-1002.

A piece of convenient Breckenridge real estate in Summit County, Colorado is the best family vacation base anywhere in the Rockies. Besides skiing, second-home owners of Breckenridge CO real estate are surrounded with a remarkable number of Rocky Mountain recreational activities and Breckenridge’s authentic Victorian Main Street shops, restaurants, festivals, and events.

Take the 2009 International Snow Sculpture Championships in January, for instance. Have you ever thought about inviting family and friends to meet you at your Breckenridge ski-in/ski-out condominium for the 19th Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships? Breckenridge CO homes are located less than two hours from the Denver International Airport and city life along the Front Range.

The January 20-24, 2008 competition includes 16 teams from around the world who gather on the whitened grounds of the Riverwalk Center near cozy Summit County vacation real estate in Breckenridge. The Breckenridge Ski Resort makes the snow and the Town of Breckenridge Public Works Department transports it to the location where a huge snow blower and 5-10 people called “snow stompers” pack it into blocks.

Five-person teams carve ice sculptures depicting cultural influences, proud heritages, and aspirations turning the Riverwalk Center into an ice village. Creating works of art from 20-ton blocks of packed snow, the international contenders use only hand tools and take a maximum of 65 hours to transform compacted snow into veritable masterpieces.

During the judging, a panel of artists awards favorites on the basis of theme, style, and technique. At the awards ceremony on Sunday, January 29 contestants will also learn who won the categories for People’s Choice, Kids’ Choice, and Artists’ Choice. All of the glowing ice statues will remain on display for another week leading up to the Ullr Festival the following week, honoring the Norse god of snow.

An exhibit exploring the last 18 years of the International Snow Sculpture Championships adds an interesting finish to the current events. During the 1980s, the event started small, broadening to be statewide by the end of the decade. In 1991, it blossomed into a kind of Olympic artistic event. Over 250 applications are received from teams around the world from places like Russia, China, Japan, Morocco, Belize, Finland, New Zealand, Mexico, Wales, Canada and the list goes on.

Events Business News named the events to the top 200 events international. It has been covered by Fuji TV, CNN, British Broadcasting Company, CBS This Morning, the Today Show, National Geographic, Sunset Magazine, Dallas Morning News, USA Today, New York Times, MSNBC, Travelocity, and the Travel Channel.

Begin to learn about the commerce, mining, and early life so that when you have family and guests over to your property in Breckenridge or to Summit County real estate, you’ll have some stories to tell. According to Mary Ellen Gilliland in her book, Colorado Rascals, Scoundrels, and No Goods of Breckenridge, there are many tall tales among them.

In addition to books that you can pick up in local bookstores, three documentary films from The Golden Stories of Breckenridge can be viewed on local television and at the Edwin Carter Museum: “The Depression Years,” “The High Line,” and “Rest in Peace.”

Be sure to include the following historic sites in your stroll through the autumn leaves:

Alice G. Milne Memorial Park contains two small houses in a Victorian lawn setting. 102 North Harris Street

Barney Ford Museum honors an escaped slave who became the first black businessman in town when he opened Ford’s Restaurant and Chop House. The family home, designed by prominent craftsman Elias Nashold was considered a showplace home. 111 East Washington Avenue

Edwin Carter 1875 Museum is a collection of natural specimens that played a significant role in the development of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Hike directly from your Breckenridge Colorado real estate to Summit County’s #1 Best Hiking Trail of Summit 2008. The splendor of Mohawk Lake Trail is only one of many inviting reasons to buy second homes in Breckenridge Colorado.

Step out from your wonderful ski-in/ski-out Breckenridge real estate on Peak 7 and head south down Highway 9 a couple of miles. Turn west on Spruce Creek Road and in about a mile you’ll see the trailhead for Mohawk Lake Trail. Resort real estate in Breckenridge forms a picturesque view to the north.

Mohawk Lakes Trail offers an intermediate family hike that encapsulates the wonderful history and beauty of an investment in Breckenridge CO real estate. From sweeping vistas, to historic ruins, to old ore cars, sheer-walled waterfalls, and rugged soaring mountain peaks, you may feel like you were already here a hundred years ago. As described by Best in Summit 2008 poll published in the Summit Daily, “The 7-mile loop trail meanders through an old mining ruin before climbing to the Continental Falls and Mohawk Lake.”

Start out on Spruce Creek Trail, enjoying the stroll through thick forest for about 2 miles. Two options present themselves: Mayflower Lake and Mohawk Lake. To explore Mayflower Lake and a 19th-century miners’ cabin and ruins from a mining settlement, take that trail after the 4X4 road. There’s actually a restored cabin labeled with a sign, “Continental Cabin,” with a large fire ring and a ladder to the loft. The cabin could be useful if you get caught in a storm or a wind storm.

After this warm-up, expect a steady climb to the old mill, falls, and Lower Mohawk Lake, complete with dramatic vistas. Continental Falls spills from the lake above down through the rocky chasms. Now take the trail around the south of the lake another half mile to arrive at Mohawk Lake.

Take it on a perfect fall day and the fluttering golden aspen leaves and occasional red-leafed trees send their fireworks throughout the valley. With the creaking of the forest trees, ripening pine needles floating to the ground, and visiting birds a flutter, the serenity of the Rocky Mountains comes into focus. During spring and summer, wildflower lovers cannot wait to glory in the magic of the floral surprises. The grandeur of the snow-capped Rockies certainly melts the heart. Skiers and snowshoers frequent the trail in the wintertime.

Rick Allemang and RealEstateColorado can be reached at 970-547-1002 for information about resort real estate in Park and Summit counties.
